Ayurveda Daily Routines to enhance health and prevent illness.

How can we fit a daily Ayurveda routine into our life? A while ago I moved to Plymouth, the space and pace of life seemed exactly what I needed. 25 years later I feel that Plymouth, as well as Devon and Cornwall have swiftly caught up with the fast pace of life we see elsewhere in the country, such as the South East and larger cities. Everyone is on the go.

We want easy to blend techniques for healthcare that fit into our daily schedules. Here are three that can easily be adopted.

Waking and sleeping time: Even if you get up 15 minutes earlier than you normally do it will benefit you psychologically and kick start the metabolism. Activate the body's natural cleansing functions by going to bed before 10.00-10.30pm. Any later than this an cortisol secretion will commence, causing stress and the body's detoxification will not be able to take place.

Screen time: Stop screen time 1-2 hours before bed and see how you feel after one week. May times we treat insomnia, stress and inflammatory illnesses by stopping screen use before sleeping. Reading a book or journalling or a calming activity without screens can help calm the nervous system.

ME time: Sideline at least 30 minutes for yourself per day. If you get up 15 minutes earlier the you already have 15 minutes extra. So getting up 30 minutes earlier or more gives you all that time to yourself. And if you switch of those screens think of all that ME time you have. Writing, painting or right brain creative activities can be beneficial, as long as there is no demand or desired outcome. If you use the extra time to go for a walk or just sit with no screens, maybe in natural settings, a garden or local park. Just looking at a plant with a cup of tea for 15-30 minutes will enhance your mood and balance you emotionally if you do it regularly

I started these techniques around 20 years ago, shortly after my move to Plymouth. What a difference in my mood and the way I am able to interact with others. Most importantly I feel fitter and healthier than I did when I was in my mid 30s ( I am now 55). People ask if I have been on a retreat or on holiday somewhere as I look so relaxed. I just tell them that I follow the principles of Ayurveda and include certain aspects as part of a daily routine.

As part of any Ayurveda consultation at our Plymouth clinic, we would recommend adopting these strategies.
