The Ayurveda clock

When to sleep, wake and eat according to Ayurveda.

Remember this is based on India Time where the sunrise and sunset is consistent.

  * Kapha Time (6:00 AM – 10:00 AM & 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM): Slow, heavy. Best time to wake up (before 6 AM!) and best time to go to bed (before 10 PM).

     * Pitta Time (10:00 AM – 2:00 PM & 10:00 PM – 2:00 AM): High fire, digestive peak. Make lunch your main meal of the day when Agni (digestive fire) is strongest.

     * Vata Time (2:00 PM – 6:00 PM & 2:00 AM – 6:00 AM): Light, active, creative. Great for afternoon meditation or light practice.

 * The Vata Window (2:00 AM – 6:00 AM): Governed by Vata (Air + Ether), which carries qualities of lightness, clarity, movement, and subtle energy.

 * Mental Clarity: Waking up 96 minutes before sunrise captures the peak of Vata's clarity. The mind naturally experiences fewer thoughts, making it the most potent time for Pranayama, meditation, and study.

 * Beating the Kapha Slump: At 6:00 AM, the day transitions into Kapha time (Earth + Water), which brings heavy, slow, and sluggish energy. Waking up after sunrise means waking up into Kapha, making you feel groggy even after 8 hours of sleep.
